ClampCut is a novel obstetric device, which allows the user to
simultaneously clamp and cut the umbilical cord after childbirth.
Obstetricians and midwives at the University Hospital of Copenhagen, who
carried out a clinical test of the ClampCut device, described it as a
valuable innovation that significantly increases safety for infant, mother
and staff in vaginal deliveries. Results of clinical trials showed: 0% blood
splattering, 0% repositioning, and 0% need to use an alternate method.
Because the cord is cut and its ends are clamped simultaneously, there is no
risk of blood splashing. This substantially reduces the danger of infection
of staff from diseases carried by the blood. The personal safety and added
sense of confidence offered to rescuers cannot be overemphasized. This is
especially true for those who rarely see childbirth in the field, perhaps
the most bio-hazardous of all EMS situations.
ClampCut is composed of two nylon clamps and a housing (concealing a
surgical stainless steel blade). A state-of-the-art, double-grip umbilical
cord clamp comes preloaded. A piston with a surgical stainless steel blade
is incorporated into the grip and concealed to enhance user protection from
sharps injury. The instrument is pre-sterilized, ready to use (with no
assembly required), and is for single use only.

The ClampCut is a disposable obstetric instrument that
simultaneously cuts the umbilical cord, clamping and securing the severed ends.
How it works:
The ClampCut is ready to use immediately after it has been removed from its sterile pouch.
The umbilical cord is inserted in the open end of the instrument about 1 cm from the infant's stomach. Thereafter, the index and middle fingers are hooked around the rests on either side of the instrument and the thumb is placed on the flat end of the piston. Minimal pressure with the thumb pushes the piston forward, cutting the cord.
As the cord is cut, a small white clamp closes tightly around the end of the cord attached to the infant and separates from the rest of the instrument.
The same action clamps the main body of the instrument around the end of the cord attached to the placenta. This clamp can be easily reopened to permit the drawing of blood from the placenta for further testing.
